History of Grama Panchayat

Vettathur Grama Panchayat is a historically significant region in Malappuram, renowned for its ancient iron ore mining heritage and its brave contributions to the 1921 Khilafat Movement. Formed officially in 1961, the Panchayat covers 35.84 square kilometers and maintains an exceptional literacy rate of 95% among its 28,104 residents. The area thrives on an agrarian economy focused on paddy and rubber, supported by robust infrastructure along the Ooty-Nilambur Interstate Highway. Its modern growth was driven by the Vettathur Development Council and social movements that established essential educational and cooperative institutions. Today, the village stands as a model of communal harmony, blending its rich tribal and revolutionary past with steady social and administrative progress.
