Geographical Location and Topography
Vettathur Grama Panchayat is situated between east longitudes 76°13'26'' and 76°19'45'' and north latitudes 10°58'49'' and 11°01'50''. Spread across the revenue villages of Karyavattam and Vettathur, the local body encompasses a total geographical area of 35.84 square kilometers, with a peak elevation reaching 544 meters above mean sea level.
The terrain is predominantly characterized by low-to-moderate elevation, comprising high hill ranges extending east-west along its southern boundary, several mid-altitude hills, and expansive valley paddy wetlands nestled in between. Steep slopes are rare. Although substantial portions of the bedrock are rocky, composed primarily of granite and laterite formations across various sectors, the overlying topsoil is exceptionally fertile.
While the pedological conditions remain inherently well-suited for paddy cultivation, the contemporary cropping pattern is dominated by cash and plantation crops, including rubber, cashew, coconut, areca nut, banana, and tapioca—with cashew cultivating extensively across the granite-laterite hill slopes.
The agrarian economy relies fundamentally on the southwest (Edavappathi) and northeast (Thulavarsham) monsoons; deficient northeast monsoon rainfall historically precipitates severe crop failure, agricultural yield losses, and acute potable water scarcity. The primary hydrological drainage network includes the Chavali Thodu, Thelakkad Thodu, and Areekka Thodu—which drain northward into the Velliyar River—along with the westward-flowing Pallikkuth Thodu, which empties into the Kadalundi River.
